8" of snow in Tuscaloosa, Alabama January 18, 1992

Changes to winter weather terminology from the NWS Huntsville.

From the NWS Huntsville:
"National Weather Service offices in Alabama and Tennessee, including NWS Huntsville, are conducting Winter Weather Awareness Week from Monday, November 17, through Wednesday, November 19, 2008. The purpose of this week is to call attention to the winter weather that we experience across northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee. Yes we can and do get winter weather!"

A few tips:

Check your alternative heating sources and review the safety rules for using them.

Check that you have a supply of food on hand that doesn't require cooking and several day supply of drinking water.

Make sure you have flashlights with fresh batteries.

When you hear about approaching winter weather fully charge your cell phone.

Have a portable battery or wind-up powered radio.

Prepare an emergency kit for your vehicle.
