November 20, 1988 Tuscaloosa Tornado

At 12:53 a.m. on 11/20/88 an F3 tornado touched down in the southern part of Tuscaloosa, AL, just south of I-59/20. Moving to the northeast, it was 400 yards wide and on the ground for about one-half mile. Eight people were injured but there were no fatalities. Fifteen homes were destroyed, 25 sustained light to moderate damage, and 50 were slightly damaged. Over $1.2 million in damage occurred.

This was part of a weather system that spawned 23 tornadoes throughout the South, destroying homes and ripping down trees. At least two people were killed and 11 injured in Mississippi. Torrential rain also fell across the South from Arkansas into Kentucky, washing out one small dam and sending streams over their banks.

In the colder air west of the rain, 5 inches of snow fell at Joplin, Mo., 3 to 8 inches of snow was reported in Montgomery County, Kan.

Here is an old video I took after the storm. I apologize for the poor quality.
